Ray: As we get to the end of this miniseries with only one issue to go, it’s becoming clearer what’s going on in the world of the Amazons. While bigotry against marginalized groups is all too real, something has been off from the start—humanity turned against the Amazons just a little too easily, and too many people who should know better are going along with it. While Tom King’s take has been much more grounded in reality, Josie Campbell has given the entire thing a bit more of a surreal vibe with the apples of discord, but not Discord herself, playing a key role. The three factions of the Amazons have united for a rare battle to survive, but not even an assist from Mary Marvel may be enough when they face off against a particularly violent, eager-to-murder Peacemaker. But he’s not the biggest villain in this issue—this one comes straight from Greek mythology and has a dark history with the Amazons.

After years of reading the lovable bruiser version of Hercules over at the competition, this one is a bit jarring—but he looms so large in the history of the Amazons that it’s intriguing to see him again. There are a lot of characters in this series, so it’s often hard to balance everyone, but this issue does a good job. There are some scene-stealing moments for Hoppy, a particularly dark moment for Nubia as she’s forced to realize that the corruption of man’s world goes far deeper than she wanted to believe, and a lingering mystery about who betrayed the Amazons. The reveal at the end of the issue likely isn’t what it looks like, given the effects, but it feels like there is still a lot to explore here with only about twenty pages left to go. The fact that Campbell is going to be taking over Shazam soon and continuing Mary’s story there makes me hopeful that some of these characters will be following her.
