Ray: The finale of Tom Taylor’s big event delivers in every way, and in some ways feels like the conclusion to everything he’s been building towards since his time at DC began. When we last left off, Beast Boy had been murdered in a sneak attack by Amanda Waller, the infected were being hunted by her paramilitary forces, and Doctor Hate had just been unmasked as… Raven, or rather her demon side, untethered from any human connection. The Titans are hunted, and so Nightwing makes an incredibly risky move—going to the President himself to discuss his move to take over the military’s network and abort the strike. This is a great example of how Taylor has been turning Nightwing into a very different kind of hero and team leader—one who does things that his mentor never could get away with thanks to a more human connection with the people on the ground and his fellow heroes.

This eliminates one threat—with a surprising cameo from a major villain from another book—but Raven’s evil doppelganger remains a massive danger, as Rachel prepares for a pitched battle within the mind. Then there’s Beast Boy’s fate, which becomes a lot clearer with a surprising twist midway through this issue. This might be the most anyone has ever thought about Starro the Conqueror’s biology since the character was created decades ago, but I do have to admit I was a bit disappointed that there was no mention of Jarro, the best starfish ever to appear in the DCU. Things resolve well, albeit with a lot of scars—at least until a shocking cliffhanger that sets up major things for one of Taylor’s books down the line. This event did an amazing job of telling a truly epic-scale story while never losing sight of what made Taylor’s work great and pulling in threads from Nightwing, Titans, and Jon Kent’s solo stories.
