Amazons Attack #1 – Josie Campbell, Writer; Vasco Georgiev, Artist; Alex Guimaraes, Colorist
Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: If any series was set up for a rough time, it’s this one—just because of the name! The original Amazons Attack crossover is probably one of the most reviled DC stories of the early 2000s, responsible for derailing several characters and leading to the viral “A Deadly Bee Weapon” moment. So the Amazons going up against man’s world again was a dicey proposition to begin with. Of course, Tom King and Josie Campbell are no creators to doubt. While King is dealing with Diana’s core story, Campbell is continuing many of the stories she set up in Lazarus Planet and Trial of the Amazons, with Nubia desperately trying to keep the diplomatic situation between America and the Amazons from deteriorating. She sets up a summit with the President and makes the decision to go alone—much to the frustration of her lover, Io, who doubts that any peace can be had.

Io is, of course, soon proven right. The summit turns into a mess, comes under attack, and Nubia is joined by Faruka of the Bana-Mighdall and Yara Flor, both of whom assumed there would be some sort of attack—and are quickly mistaken for attackers. With the government out to get them, the unlikely trio is left to flee, and saved from certain death by Mary Marvel (and Hoppy) who now has close ties to the Amazons thanks to the new source of her powers. That leaves the four of them as fugitives. I enjoyed this comic, mostly thanks to strong art by Georgiev and enjoyable scripting from Campbell, but it requires accepting that the DCU is a far crueler, more bigoted place than it’s usually portrayed as. The level of heel-turning that the U.S. and its government does against Wonder Woman’s people here stretches belief a little, sometimes making this feel like it takes place in the competition.
