As if they weren’t cool enough on their own, the International Space Station and the Guardians of the Galaxy have teamed up to offer students the chance to fly an experiment into space! The Guardians of the Galaxy Space Station Challenge is open to students in the United States between the ages of 13 and 18. Participants must pick between Team Groot (plant biology experiments) or Team Rocket (materials and technology innovations). Think fast because the contest closes on January 31, 2018!
Selected student experiments will be flown into space inside a 4″ cubic enclosure, either a Space Tango CubeLab or a NanoRacks NanoLab. Each type of lab has different capabilities and limitations, so be sure to check out all of the restrictions before choosing a module!
The program is being organized by the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), the group that runs the portion of the International Space Station as a National Laboratory. CASIS and Marvel Entertainment teamed up in 2016 to design a Rocket and Groot patch for the ISS. This new student opportunity is an outgrowth of that collaboration. (Lucasfilm released a Star Wars-themed patch with CASIS in 2017.)
