Consider, if you will, the noble AA battery. We use them in our remote controls, various electronic toys and gadgets, and even for our gaming devices. Admittedly, many modern consoles and handhelds eschew traditional power cells in favor of onboard rechargeables, but there are notable exceptions. In my household, for example, AAs remain a valuable commodity because we are a proud family of retro gamers.

I purchased my first Game Boy system—a Game Boy Color in Dandelion—in 1999, but I didn’t start actively collecting Nintendo’s landmark portable systems until around a decade later. This means my kids, currently nine and twelve, spent their formative years surrounded by these tiny plastic boxes of wonder. We’ve spent practically their entire lives enjoying titles like Pokémon Red and Blue, Super Mario Land, and, of course, Tetris together. I’ll spare you the math, but suffice it to say that we go through scores of batteries.

Within the last three or four years, I’ve started modifying my Game Boys, both to restore damaged units and to add new functionality like backlighting. The problem? Modding systems also serves to increase overall power consumption, meaning we go through even more batteries.

That’s why I trust Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries for all our gaming needs. I’ve tried lots of solutions, from battery packs to individual rechargeable cells, but there’s a reason why these are the #1 longest-lasting AA batteries. Whether during an old-school Pokémon swap with the kids, a late-night multiplayer session with friends, or making your way up the tournament ladder, you need a reliable power source–batteries that won’t run out of juice just when we need it most.

But that reliability isn’t the only reason Energizer Ultimate Lithiums are my go-to batteries. They’re 33% lighter than traditional alkalines, which counts for a lot when you’re dealing with bulkier devices. More importantly, their leak-resistant construction prevents damage to sensitive internal components; I’ve already spent way too much time scrubbing corrosion off of battery terminals!

Gaming can get expensive. New devices and components often require significant upfront cost, and retro tech only increases in price as it becomes harder and harder to find. Quality batteries, however, are surprisingly affordable and an easy way to protect your investment.

So whether it’s an Xbox One wireless controller, those legacy Wii Remotes, or these ancient ancestors of our modern-day handheld systems, nothing keeps them safely running stronger and longer than Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries.
