While The Uncanny X-Men got me into comics, it was 1980s spinoff series The New Mutants that made me an avid reader. By 1982, the X-Men-proper (with the obvious exception of Kitty Pryde) were all “adults,” and this junior trainee corps of mutant teens was the next generation. They were my generation.
When I began to hear rumblings concerning a New Mutants feature film back in 2015, I was cautiously optimistic, but since seeing what Fox has done with the X-Men property since then—Deadpool, Logan, Legion, and, most recently, Gifted—I’ve permitted myself to be genuinely giddy. Then, of course, it was explained that director Josh Boone’s (The Fault in Our Stars) vision for the film was “like a haunted house movie,” and that set my mind reeling.
For me, today’s trailer reveal confirms three things:
- The filmmakers have nailed the desired “Stephen King meets John Hughes” aesthetic.
- The movie does appear to be based, at least in part, on the Demon Bear Saga.
- I simply cannot wait for its April 13, 2018 opening!
