Usagi Yojimbo, the brilliant creation of Stan Sakai, is back on television. Long tied to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (both properties started as independent comics), I noticed an empty blister pack at ToyFair17 and had an absolute fit of delight. Sadly, no toys were on display—although the rest of the Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures were, and wow. But darnit, I wanted Usagi!
And now I have him. Playmates was kind enough to send me a full set of TMNT Samurai figures (minus the horses, of course). That’s Leo, Mikey, Raph, Donnie, and not one but three Usagi Yojimbo figures! Basic, armored, and a larger figure.
All seven figures have the impressive styling and build I’ve come to love from Playmates. They’re better than the TMNT toys of my childhood (which weren’t exactly hot garbage). My six year-old loves TMNT, and loves these. Personally, I’m keeping the Usagi figure (basic, not armored). He was impossible to find when I was a kid.
Edit: Due to a misunderstanding, it is NOT the SDCC exclusive that we are giving away! Rather, it is the WalMart Exclusive Armored Usagi and Armored horse, signed by Stan Sakai.
Just fill out the form below. Contest open to US residents only. Contest closed to other GeekDad/GeekMom writers and their families. Winner chosen via Random Number Generator.
EDIT: Contest closed!
The contest is open until midnight on August 6. Coincidentally, that’s when the third part of the current Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles storyline ends. The storyline featuring Usagi. But you knew this, because you’re watching it, right?
Note: Playmates Toys provided me, as I noted, with seven action figures. I gave my son Leonardo before the Sabbath for doing all his chores. Now he’s sweeping the floors, hoping to earn the right to the others.
