The Great Big Beautiful Podcast, Episode 124: Phil Plait

You can listen on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and YouTube; you can follow the RSS feed; or you can listen right here!

This week, we’re looking to the stars with the Bad Astronomer himself, Phil Plait!

Plait is an astronomer, author, and science communicator. He wrote and hosted Crash Course Astronomy, was the head science writer of Bill Nye Saves the World, and has appeared as a talking head on approximately a bazillion Discovery Channel shows. He’s also been writing as the Bad Astronomer since the invention of the internet (only a slight exaggeration). He began on his own blog, contributed to Slate for a long time, and recently moved over the SyFy Wire, which is where he is now.

On this episode, we talk about science as inspiration, how to encourage kids who are interested in science and astronomy, the current state of scientific literacy in popular culture and the media, and where we go from here.

  1. For telescopes check with your local library as well. I know several cities have a check out a telescope program where the local astronomy clubs have teamed with the local libraries. Also many local astronomy clubs have open viewing nights.
