As those of you following me on Twitter know, I combed Intel’s International Science and Engineering Fair for… the best and the brightest? to be true, these kids are all the best and the brightest. They make 40 year-old schlubs like me feel every inch of their wasted years (Don Henley and the rest of the Eagles, you’re not helping!). However, some of these kids stood out to me as people of special note. My first young overlord — excuse me — scientist, noticed that plenty of people die from falling asleep at the wheel. You don’t have to cure cancer to save lives, you just have to see a problem, and suggest an easy, low-cost solution.
“Stay Awake for God Sake”: by Aya Abdoul Kader El Saheb
“Plasma Projector”: Blake Birmingham explains and demonstrates his plasma projector. I forgot to ask him if his intentions were good or evil. Damn.
“The Design and Construction of a Fuelless Power Generator”: Joshua Uhuotu Toluwani Ojapa and Funmilola Olanrewaju Lawal explain and demonstrate their fuelless power generator. A low-cost, non-fossil fuel option for the third world.
“Fighting Superbugs: Validating Disinfectants”: Rosemary Halfyard discovers that current disinfectants are so effective, that she could not neiutralize them in a laboratory setting. Reports of running zombies have been largely exaggerated.
“Developing a Computer Role-Playing Game as a Spanish Learning Tool”: Juan Solano has designed a computer-based RPG that teaches you Spanish. Had I only know when I started up with WoW. I’d know all the languages of man by now.
“Chlorella as an Alternative Fuel”: Lauren Cameron spent seven months developing an alternative fuel source. What’d YOU do?
“See-Through Camera Jammer”: Yuk Ma, Ho Yi Leung, and Ka Kuen Chan show us how to protect ourselves from cyber-perves, who can peep through our clothes using IR, low-light, and other techniques intended for night-time surveillance. These kids clearly had the strongest presentation. Unfortunately, overhead PA systems made audio pickup problematic.
