I’ve always been a fan of the bowling-style bag, so when I saw this officially licensed original series Star Trek bag on ThinkGeek, I think some drool actually escaped the edges of my mouth. But I have pretty high expectations from my purses. Did this one meet them?
First, let’s discuss style points for the Star Trek Retro Tech Purse. Though style isn’t the most important feature in a bag to me, it definitely counts. And this bag has style from every angle. The defining Star Trek uniform colors of red, blue, and gold, in subtle stripes on the front of the bag (the yellow one is also a zipper pocket); the tasteful lines and Star Trek symbol; the colorful, adjustable, and removable shoulder strap; and the Star Trek-themed lining fabric, which is a nice light yellow color to make it easy to find your items… Yes, you could say this bag has style. Plus, it allows you to express your appreciation for Star Trek while being subtle enough to likely go over the heads of people not in the know.
Next, quality and function. How useful is the bag? I would say that this bag met about 90% of my requirements for a good purse. Though missing a back slip pocket and only having one interior pocket, the bag has both a shoulder strap and handles (the latter of which are reinforced with webbing), it zips everywhere, keeping your possessions safe, and it has both an interior and exterior zipper pocket for those smaller items. The manufacture of the bag is quite sturdy, with heavy-duty hardware on the shoulder strap, especially. The bag is very roomy inside, with its interior measuring 11 1/2 inches x 7 1/2 inches x 3 inches. It is plenty big for everything even I need to carry, with room to spare. The handles do occasionally get in the way, being so long, but that’s a small quibble. Yes, I believe the quality is there, and function too.
So yes, this bag definitely met my high expectations and standards. Made of PU leather and nylon, the Star Trek Retro Tech Purse ($49.99) is a perfect everyday bag. Don’t save this one for special occasions or cosplay. There is even enough room for both your tricorder and your communicator.
Note: I received a sample of the bag for review.
