There seems to be a confluence of geektastic events occurring on May 4th. It’s like having the two best geek equivalent Hallmark holidays on the same day. It just so happens that it is both Star Wars Day (may the 4th be with you) and since it is the first Saturday of May it is also the annual Free Comic Book Day at comic book shops around the country. Fans of some of the most beloved franchises from within our geek culture will be out en masse to dress up as Star Wars characters and superheroes. The day would not be complete without waiting in line for a bag of free comic books at the local comic book shop and reading them in line for the first weekend of Iron Man 3 (for many costumed fans this will be their second or third viewing of the film).

I will be taking my three daughters out to our local comic book shop for a giant bag of pre-sorted ‘kid-friendly’ comics. The major highlight for my kids is to see the amazing cosplay of the local club of caped crusaders called MN Superheroes United. They have put on a great showing for the past three years we’ve been going to Free Comic Book Day. We will likely see some of the Vader’s Fist 501st Star Wars cosplay club in attendance as well. I’ll take lots of photos for my local Free Comic Book Day recap.

What are you going to be doing for this auspicious day of geeky delight? To find a comic book shop near you that is participating be sure to check out the Free Comic Book Day event website.

May the 4th be with you!
