Second Star Trek: Into Darkness Trailer and Easter Egg – Are You the 1701?

Geek Culture

Today, the above second teaser trailer for Star Trek: Into Darkness was released. This is the trailer some people saw at non-IMAX theaters over the weekend when they were watching The Hobbit.

UPDATE: It appears that Paramount has mistakenly removed this trailer from Apple’s YouTube account on the basis of copyright infringement. You can view the trailer on Apple’s website. If you click the drop-down beside “Watch Now,” you can download the trailer in multiple formats, including 1080p.

Go ahead, now. Watch it carefully. But be sure to watch it in 1080p, and full screen. Did you see it? No? Go back and pause at 1:07. Do you see it now?

Yes, that is a link. If you cannot see the link, it reads AreYouThe1701.com. It appears that Bad Robot has started the viral campaign for Star Trek: Into Darkness.

Visiting the website doesn’t reveal much. You will see the following:

source: areyouthe1701.com

Click the landing page, and a form pops up, asking, “Shall we begin?”

You will be asked for your e-mail address, your country, your zip/postal code, and your birthday. Once you submit that information, you will get a notification that reads: “Thank you, we will tell you when the search begins.” That’s it. A tease and then you have to wait. Of course, I signed up.

There is also a Are You the 1701 Facebook page and Twitter account. As it is asking if we are the 1701, does this mean that somehow we will be part of the crew of the Enterprise? At this point, who knows? But, I am interested to find out.

So, are you the 1701? Are you going to sign up and take a trip through this wormhole?
