Geek parents: Get your kids and participate in the GeekDad NFL Survivor Pool (photo: Steve Henry)

Now that our GeekDad Fantasy Football League is fully armed and operational with twelve fantastic GeekDad/Kid teams, we are switching gears to get the GeekDad NFL survivor pool launched. This is a great option for sports geeks and their children to further their enjoyment of the NFL season without the time commitment of the fantasy football.

What is a NFL survivor pool? Most people are familiar with office and family pools where you pick winners of all the NFL games. In this setup, you look at your win-loss record to determine an overall winner. To make things more interesting (and more geeky), NFL survivor pools have grown in popularity. In a typical survivor pool, you pick one winner per week of the NFL season. The catch is that you can only pick one team per season. Once you use the Super Bowl champ, New York Giants, you cannot use them again for the rest of the season. (As a Cleveland Browns fan, I wonder if you ever use them in a Survivor league, but I digress.)

The GeekDad NFL survivor league will have a twist. In many survivor leagues, you are eliminated after you pick a team who does not win. We do not work that way. In our league, you will continue to play.

Being GeekDads, we have to kick it up a notch with win multipliers. For 1 win, you get 1 point. For 2 consecutive wins, you get 2 points for both wins (2 wins x 2 = 4 points total). For each additional game in the consecutive win streak, you get another point (4 consecutive wins x 4 = 16 points). For example, 3 consecutive wins, 1 loss, 5 consecutive wins, 2 losses, 1 win would result in (3 wins x 3 + 0 for loss + 5 wins x 5 + 0 for two losses + 1 win x 1 = 35 points total). The objective is to score as many points as you can by the end of the season.

This is a different format than our fantasy baseball and fantasy football leagues where teams are made up of GeekParent/Child combos. In this pool, you are encouraged to let your child/children compete on their own. Both GeekMoms and GeekDads are encouraged to participate as well.

Many of our sports geek parents will take no convincing to participate in our league. For those of you on the fence, here are four reasons, starting on First Down, why you should consider joining our league.

First Down: Friendly Competition – There’s nothing like some friendly competition within the family and over the Internet to make the NFL season more interesting … especially when you are a Cleveland Browns fan! See if your spouse’s strategy to pick by team mascot is superior to your vast knowledge of NFL matchups.

Second Down: Strategy – It is an opportunity to teach your kids about strategy. Let your child pick the Green Bay Packers in week one. Before you know it you’ll hear, ‘You mean I REALLY can’t pick them again this season?!’ Good things come to those who wait!

Third Down: It doesn’t take much time. While I really enjoy fantasy sports, not everyone has the time for them. This doesn’t take much time, but it is a lot of fun.

Fourth Down: It gives you an excuse to watch football all day Sunday. You are just trying to be a good GeekDad and do some ‘scouting’ with your son or daughter!
