When The Way hit theaters last fall in limited release, it immediately gained critical acclaim as a clever and inspirational story. The film, directed by Emilio Estevez and starring his father, Martin Sheen, tells the tale of a father who decides to journey to Europe to complete his son’s pilgrimage of walking the Camino de Santiago after his son dies on the hike.
The movie is very well done and moves easily from an enjoyable travel movie to a moving and emotional film about a father and a son’s relationship to a provocative look at self-discovery. Estevez says about The Way, “The wonderful thing about the movie is that it says “I’m OK being exactly who I am in my own skin and I’m happy that way.” I just don’t think we hear that enough. All of us are totally flawed and that’s the beauty of being human.”
