Zombies vs. Unicorns

Ok, so I haven’t actually finished reading the advance reader copy I picked up, but how could you not be intrigued by a book titled Zombies vs. Unicorns? Zombies vs. Unicorns is edited by Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier, both authors of several books for kids and teens. It includes short stories from a host of authors. Team Unicorn is Holly Black, Meg Cabot, Kathleen Duey, Margo Lanagan, Garth Nix, Naomi Novik, and Diana Peterfreund. Team Zombie is Justine Larbalestier, Libba Bray, Cassandra Clare, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Maureen Johnson, Carrie Ryan, and Scott Westerfeld. (I do find it interesting that there are very few guys on either team—but count me in for Team Zombie.)

The stories in the book are each helpfully marked with a zombie or unicorn icon so you can easily avoid the opposing side if desired. Black and Larbalestier don’t have their own stories, but they do introduce each story with a bit of dialogue. The book is targeted at ages 14 and up; skimming through I noticed a few profanities here and there, and any talk of unicorns comes with talk of virgins, so there might be some innuendo as well.

Zombies vs. Unicorns is available for pre-order and is expected to be released September 21. I’ll be sure to give a full review after I’ve read it.

Wired: OK, yeah, they pretty much had me at the title.

Tired: Where are all the guys? Hopefully this book doesn’t get passed up by boys as a “girl book.”
