Well, I’ve gone and done it. I have joined the ranks of VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) coaches and formed a team. So far the team consists solely of my two kids, ages 10 and 12, but we will considering growing if we find anyone in the area interested.

Our first official activity as a VRC team was a trip to see Astro Boy. It was all in the name of research and inspiration, yeah, that’s it, research. Then we put together a simple Protobot Kit to get in some driving practice at the office before bed-time and grumpy attitudes snuck up on us.

The VEX Competition this year is called “Clean Sweep“. The object of the game is to finish with more balls on the opposing alliance’s side of the field than your own. We have decided that we don’t have time to build and practice with a complex ball mover and hopper. Our goal is to push all of the smaller green balls under the wall to the opponent’s side. We will have to rely on our allies to move the higher scoring balls over the wall, or into the goals.

Our first competition is this Saturday (Oct 31, 2009) at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas. Stop by between 10am and 2pm if you’re in the area and want to see some robot competition. Event info can be found here: WOC VEX Clean Sweep Invitational

In the interest of full disclosure: I work for the company that produces and organizes the VEX Robotics System and the VEX Robotics Competition.
