In television and movies, the past few years can tentatively be called the Age of The Reboot. Recently on the television side, we have had reboots on Battlestar Galactica, V, and Knight Rider, among others. And on the movie side, Hollywood just went wild: Star Trek, Batman, Superman, Halloween, Friday The 13th, and on and on and on.
Are the movie moguls having a hard time with coming up with new scripts? Or are reboots a boon, as they play into the nostalgia gene of the 70′s generation as we move into our late 30′s and early 40′s?
Personally, I am a big fan of the Star Wars Expanded Universe (EU). I’ve read almost all of the novels and series that followed the adventures of the those beloved heroes and new dastardly villains after the destruction of the second Death Star in Return of the Jedi. These include the X-Wing series, the Thrawn trilogy, the New Jedi Order series, Dark Nest, and Legacy of the Force. I’m currently working my way through Fate of the Jedi, anticipating each release like an addled crack fiend.
Just within the Star Wars EU, I can see a lot of potential for new TV series and / or new movies. Many of us are anxiously anticipating the new live-action Star Wars TV show. But, just for a day (okay maybe 20 years), I’d like to be an entertainment mega-god with the power to summon IP rights to any of the above story lines. But then I’d have some tough choices to make.
Who would I cast in the lead roles?
