As a relatively new geekdad, I was saddened by the news that Discovery Communications is closing down all 103 of its brick-and-mortar Discovery Stores and going to an exclusive ecommerce model. Aside from the thousand-odd employees facing unemployment, I won’t be able to share the fun trips to the store with my kid. While he’d surely enjoy staring at all of the shiny little doo-dads, he’s still too young to really appreciate the hardcore geek gear that the place hawks.
On the brighter side, as the Wise Bread blog points out, the inevitable clearance sales will probably get thrifty geekdads fighting the crowds to bid farewell to a megamall mainstay. Find a store near you and get out there soon, before all the cool stuff is gone.
