Green Lantern #37 – Jeremy Adams, Writer; Xermanico, Artist; Romulo Fajardo Jr, Colorist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: Bringing Green Lantern back to Earth has opened the door for Jeremy Adams to pay tribute to some of the weirder eras of the character. Kyle is now back on Earth, holing up in Hollywood under the disguise of being Odyssey’s bodyguards – as the young time thief finds her career as an actress taking off. But fame brings trolls, and she soon finds herself being attacked online for her unusual facial feature. Kyle, infuriated by this, starts responding to her trolls – and winds up spending all his time arguing with anonymous worms online. Of course, at the same time, someone is going around the city, killing people who anger them online and creating a serial killer epidemic. The metaphor here is a little obvious, but it’s pretty funny and has some good messages about how the plague of social media trolls can quickly pull in just about everyone and drag them down to their level.

Hal Jordan doesn’t appear much in this issue, with he and his allies still heading into deep space – and discovering a dazzling secret in a splash page that leads to the next big mystery. But this issue is almost all about Kyle, as he has his first date with Jade since his return – but his obsession with the trolls almost ruins it. And at the same time, the Troll finds Odyssey and makes her and Kyle his new target. This villain should have been funny, but the creative team actually manages to make it fairly serious and threatening. Its defeat takes things into the realm of the absurd, almost like something out of the current Lobo series, but after seeing the last page, I kind of feel like this issue was designed to be lighter and sillier on purpose, to lull us into a false sense of security. Because Adams is getting ready to delve into some of the darkest chapters in Kyle Rayner’s history.
