Wonder Woman #29 – Stephanie Williams, Writer; Jeff Spokes, Artist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: Tom King is taking a break from Wonder Woman (only for two issues, sorry to the professional haters), but the title is in very capable hands with Stephanie Williams and Jeff Spokes. After the events of the last year, Diana has reached her breaking point, losing her true love, becoming a mother, and dealing with a highly traumatic mission. She’s in dire need of some time to clear her head, so she’s brought Lizzie to Themyscira where she can leave her briefly in the care of her Amazon sisters. She’s joined by Queen Nubia, General Philippus, and the three Wonder Girls – Donna, Cassie, and Yara. While she retreats to the meditation groves, the Amazons are left with their biggest challenge yet – babysitting. Lizzie, separated from her mother for the first time, is inconsolable, so the Wonder Girls decide to try to calm her with a combat demonstration. Hey, it makes sense on Themyscira.

But it quickly becomes clear something is very wrong. Lizzie doesn’t seem calmed by the clashing swords, quite the opposite. Her screams become more distressed and painful to listen to, while the Wonder Girls’ sparring turns from friendly to toxic. They start fighting to hurt and kill, and their insults go from banter to targeting each other’s weakest points. Nubia steps in before something serious happens, and the group is left to figure out what’s infected the island. It soon becomes clear that one of Diana’s trickiest enemies has made landfall here, poisoning the very energy of Themyscira, and Diana is locked away in solitude with no way to know anything is wrong. The issue is overall strong, with very unique art that’s different from the usual style, and it gives us an intriguing look into Themyscira and some characters who don’t often get the spotlight amid the usual Wonder Woman plotlines.
