Ray: Most alternate universes have a pretty simple concept, but this Elseworlds where a young Kara Zor-El survives Krypton’s explosion – but crashes on an alien planet with a baby Kal-El – has turned out to be incredibly ambitious. It jumps around in time, it brings Kara into conflict with one powerful force after another, and it shows exactly what would change if the aliens of the universe knew there were two Kryptonians left out there. Kara and Kal-El are in the custody of the Blue Lanterns, but it soon becomes clear that they’re not being fostered – they’re prisoners in a cozy cave, with the Guardians being highly focused on making sure they never get near a yellow sun. Saint Walker is the only one who seems interested in their well-being, but it’s not long before Kara makes a break for it – and that sets into motion a chain of events that rewrite the whole power structure of the universe.
When we see Kara again, it’s not the Lanterns pursuing her – it’s a powerful force from the fifth dimension, Ms. Mxyzptlk. Why is Mxy a woman in this world? No reason, maybe they just felt like it, or maybe it’s one of the strange little ripples in this universe. They’re far more interested in what’s going on with Kara. She’s now in possession of the blue ring that used to belong to Walker, and she’s used it to create a vision of Krypton for Kal-El to live in. The baby is growing up fast, now a toddler, and he’s learning about the planet he should have grown up in. But as we explore this false Krypton, it becomes clear that it’s a lot more limited than Kara pretends at first, as even her hope has limits. This is a fascinating issue that really shows just how deep Kara’s grief goes and how far she’s willing to go to ensure her brother has something she never will. I have no idea where this is going, but every issue has been stronger than the last.
