Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: It’s the conclusion of the first arc of Bleeding Hearts, and the devastating final issue centers around the twisted annual event of the Outbreak. The zombies have gathered a large number of surviving humans, including Poke’s little friend Rabbit, and now they’re set to hunt them in a murderous ritual that celebrates the rise of the zombies. Rabbit is among the initial group of humans released into the enclosure, protected by a mysterious one-handed woman named Ruby while her mother is presumed dead. The segments that focus on the little girl are almost unbearably tense, as we see that not only the zombies are the danger to an innocent child in a situation like this. Even when there’s a moment of good news, it’s immediately punctuated by the harsh reminder that not everyone can make it out alive in a situation like this, no matter how much they deserve it.

And then there’s Poke, who has been battling his dueling natures for the entire series. His friend Mush just wants him to have a good time preying on humans, but Poke has become repulsed by the entire idea of eating humans as he gets closer and closer to being one. When he tries to reveal the truth to his friends, things go horribly wrong. From the start, this series had one brilliant idea behind it – telling the same story not just from two different perspectives but from two different worlds, with the zombie society having just as much reason to it as the human one, but with the horrific touch that they absolutely cannot coexist. Now, that first conflict is over as Poke has chosen his side, but as his transformation escalates, there are even more unanswered questions awaiting us. The series has taken a huge turn into the unknown as we head into the upcoming arc.
