Wonder Woman #33 – Tom King, Writer; Daniel Sampere, Artist; Alejandro Sanchez, Colorist
Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: Tom King knows how to build tension like no one else, and this issue has some of the best set pieces of the entire series so far. After over a year, the main characters are finally reunited. Steve Trevor has escaped from the underworld, and is finally rejoining his now-adult daughter and his one-time love in time to face the Matriarch. But there’s a bittersweet nature to this reunion. Lizzie has never met him, except in time-travel antics, and this is a very different Wonder Woman. She’s hardened, grieving, and on a mission for one thing – war. As Steve tries to reconnect with her, she’s more concerned with ripping open a portal to the Underworld once again and leading her family through it one battle at a time so she can get to the source of the evil that’s taken over the world. But this is Diana – and so for every question, she might have a unique solution that no one sees coming.

This issue is essentially an all-star parade of epic scenes from Greek mythology. Starting with Cerebus, who guards the gates to hell – but Diana has a unique and very welcome way of dealing with the fearsome hound. The ferryman Charon is much less welcoming, given that Steve has escaped his clutches before, and he comes ready to fight – but Diana is ready for that as well. And then there’s Zeus, who is none too happy to find his daughter invading the realm of the Gods. How Diana reacts pretty much shows just how far she’s willing to go to end this nightmare. And how she plans to do that is the last big twist of the issue, with one more major player from Greek mythology entering the fray – or rather, three more. And as the issue ends, we’re set for the biggest showdown of the entire series so far, as the Matriarch and Wonder Woman finally face off for the first time.
