Ray: Tom Taylor’s original adventure, a unique pastiche on Arthurian legend, has reached the end of its first arc – and it doesn’t get any bigger than this, as the kid holding the sword of King Arthur is ready to confront the main villain. Did we mention the main villain is possessed by the spirit of Mordred? And he’s the President of the United States? And he’s Felicity’s father? That’ll set the stakes nice and high for a big showdown. Felicity wastes no time masterfully ragebaiting her father, who seems to be partially based on a certain President but not so much that it becomes incredibly obvious. Rather, the villain’s characterization more seems to be centered around a classic lust for power – accentuated but not created by Mordred’s influence, as the sword clearly seems to think he has the President under his thrall. He doesn’t exactly – but that might actually be the worse option.

The other kids don’t have as much to do as Felicity this issue, but they have their own plotlines. For one, it’s rescuing his grandmother from the government goons – as the flinty old lady gets the chance to steal the show once again. For another, it’s about gaining the confidence to access the full potential of his magical weapon. Overall, this is a solid final issue of the arc, but it does leave a lot of unanswered questions and potential for more – which I think it was supposed to. This is a title that feels like it was written to be a graphic novel more than an ongoing comic series, and I think it’ll find a much bigger audience in that format once it’s released. The ending hints at a major new threat still coming in the second volume, so I highly recommend people picking this up so we get it. This is one of the few all-ages originals DC has put out in recent years, and it’s off to a great start.
