Justice League Unlimited #11 – Mark Waid, Writer; Carmine Di Giandomenico, Artist; Tamra Bonvillain, Colorist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: Mark Waid, along with Josh Williamson, has been one of the showrunners for this era of the DCU, and the two talents collide in this jam-packed issue leading up to the events of DC KO. When we last left off, the Time Trapper had arrived at the Watchtower, mortally wounded after being targeted by mysterious time assassins. This ancient, evolved version of Doomsday had a message for the League – but he had to survive to deliver it. The problem was, the time energy surrounding him was making it impossible to get close enough to operate. Metamorpho, whose aging is measured in half-life, was called in to help – but as he was trying to figure out how to repair the ancient being, the Watchtower came under attack by a stealth Parademon infiltration, and the entire facility started falling apart. That set the stakes high as the countdown to annihilation began for everyone inside.

Carmine Di Giandomenico, stepping in on art for this issue, does a great job of capturing the frantic pace of the issue, as lifelines fall apart under the feet of characters and survival ticks away. There’s another subplot involving Power Girl and Geo-Force dealing with a supernatural threat under Markovia that, along with the twisted Legion from the future, threatens to turn them against each other. Mr. Terrific plays one of the lead roles this issue, as he stays one step ahead of the chaos and tries to contain the invasion, but even he’s out of his depths here. It’s only when he discovers a secret “hack” involving the Time Trapper’s abilities that the day is saved, and Doomsday is finally able to give his message. And no surprise, it ties in with what Superman has been dealing with. While this issue can feel a little overwhelming at points, it delivers on pulse-pounding action throughout.
