JSA #6 – Jeff Lemire, Writer; Diego Olortegui, Artist; Luis Guerrero, Colorist
Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: The first five issues of this series have split the JSA across the universe, and left massive rifts in the team in the process. Now it all comes down to this issue, which potentially changes the entire future of the team. Tensions are rising among the team members, with Yolanda Montez’s search for Doctor Midnite leading her to erratic and vicious behavior. Jade tries to rein her in, but a grim discovery leads to her viciously attacking a minion – with deadly consequences. As the fallout from this builds, it becomes clear that not all is right between the younger JSA members, formerly of Infinity Inc. The tension between Hourman and Jesse Quick gets worse, as Jesse reveals that something seems to be wrong with her. And of course, one member of the team is not who they appear to be, and the man using Obsidian’s body seems ready to make his move.

But that’s nothing compared to what the missing team members have going on, as the Tower of Fate comes under attack by an army of demons as the original JSAers hold the line. Flashbacks to Wildcat and Khalid’s training sessions show the very different way they approach superheroes, but also make clear that there’s a deep vein of respect between the two men. The army of villains who is coming after the JSA has some interesting faces in it, including one who shouldn’t be in this timeline at all. The battle builds until one character falls in battle in a truly unexpected moment that sets the stakes for this series sky high. Will this death actually stick in the long run? I’m not sure, but given the setup for the series, it could. This wouldn’t be the first time Lemire killed off a character I thought was untouchable, and this title continues to be a very different but no less excellent continuation of Johns’ work on the book.
