Ray: Our return to the Tangent Universe has been one of the most fascinating books out of Black Label so far, plunging us into a dark and haunted world where shades hunt the few remaining humans and the mysterious lantern-bearer known as Green Lantern is the only defense around. Most of the heroes of this world are gone, but last issue saw Green Lantern and her young companion encounter this world’s version of Batman – a cursed medieval prince now calling himself Batwraith, whose spirit pilots a mobile suit of armor. But the intro to this issue introduces the darkest threat in the series so far – a mysterious cult known only as Providence, where desperate pilgrims come for safety only to be exploited and tortured in a strange religious ritual by a sorceress known as Demona. This segment is the most horror-like of the already eerie series.

Last issue introduced a mysterious beast who turned out to be a human bound by a curse, and the identity of this character is a pretty big surprise. Now that the odd little family of travelers is growing – despite Green Lantern’s skepticism about taking on any more members – they travel to a town that they visited weeks ago, only to find it empty. I’m assuming this is Providence at work, as the desperate settlement sought out help only to find horrors. The only residents left there seem to be a pair of creepy children who have already been affected somehow, and the attempt to reach them leads all the main characters to undergo a dark night of the soul, as they’re forced to confront the darkest secrets hidden within their minds. No surprise, this continues to be a very strong story, and one that also features some brilliant art by the best horror artist in the industry, especially during the dream sequences.
