DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #2 – Ian Flynn, Writer; Adam Bryce Thomas, Artist; Matt Herms, Colorist
Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: Last issue of this fast-paced crossover crashed the heroes of two worlds into each other as Darkseid sought out the Chaos Emeralds – and we promptly got some hilariously bizarre and surprisingly on-point character interactions. Shadow and Batman bonding over their mutual trauma particularly worked nicely, and Sonic and Flash arguing over who’s faster will never get old. But there isn’t much time for boasting – Apokalips’ assault on Angel Island is only intensified, and the evil New God quickly gets his hands on the first emerald after pursuing the two speedy heroes with his Omega Beams. From there, his top henchmen target the pairs of heroes, with Steppenwolf going up against Shadow and Batman in a dramatic Gotham-based battle. There are some wins, some losses, but it becomes pretty clear that the heroes are outmatched – and they get an assist in the most unlikely way.

I’m always a fan of the trope where the villain has to work with the heroes against a bigger threat, and it makes sense that Robotnik would have a point where he went “Okay, dark God taking over the world – time to work with the hedgehog”. Of course, that doesn’t mean they get along – they spend most of their time sniping at each other, and Wonder Woman takes an instant dislike to the egomaniacal mad scientist. DC has hinted that this will be one of the biggest and longest crossovers they’ve ever done, with plans past a year, and it was a little hard to see how after the first issue. This issue makes that a lot clearer – the team-up is over by the end of this issue, and both groups find themselves in an unexpected situation that promises a lot of mileage to explore over the next few issues. This is definitely more in the tone of the Sonic series than a regular DC series, but it’s a blast so far.
