Beasts of Burden Omnibus TPB by Evan Dorkin Artist & Colorist: Jill Thompson, Benjamin Dewey Letterer: Nate Piekos Cover Artist: Jill Thompson
I am immensely glad to have scooped up this hefty volume where a pack of dogs (and a stray cat) face the supernatural. The stories have a rhythmic quality and the drawings and watercolors are superb, some of the best I have seen in a long while, and the personalities of each mongrel are always on point. The lettering is dynamic; you can breeze through all the stories in just one sitting (proving you have one lazy afternoon) and the stories are that perfect mix between horrific and entertaining.
The quiet suburb of Burden Hill turns out to not be so quiet after all, with puppy haunted houses, cats that are familiar to witches (and must be stopped), dead zombie dogs, and much more! It’s up to a determined group of ordinary dogs and cats to defend their home from these and more menaces such as demonic frogs, and a rat cabal led by a dead mystic. It is a fun read where the events conclude in a very fast but believable way, no wonder it has been awarded an Eisner eight times.
Did I mention Hellboy is a guest appearance? He is!
