Blacksad: They All Fall Down – Part Two | Writer: Juan Díaz Canales | Artist, Colorist, Cover Artist: Juanjo Guarnido | Translator: Diana Schutz, Brandon Kander
Juan Díaz Canales and artist Juanjo Guarnido are the best graphic novel makers out there, and the finale of this amazing story, set in ’50s America, does not disappoint. First published in France and then translated into Spanish and English, the conclusion of this wondrous story has a lot to say about ambition, corruption, and love.
John Blacksad is a black cat in an animal-shaped world. The curious thing is that race does not necessarily affect relationships, as they are meant to portray personalities more than anything. You can see weird couples such as birds and otters, cows and dogs, in a convoluted portrayal that in this way creates an entirely different universe.
Blacksad is a private detective. He can land a punch, drink whisky, and smoke heavily—you get the idea.
Kenneth Clarke, head of the unions that built the subways, is dead. Blacksad is almost there; he wants to solve this murder, he knows who the hired thug is, but he needs to tie him to magnate Lewis Solomon, all before his best pal Weekly lands in the electric chair, accused of a murder he did not commit.
Lewis Solomon intends to finish his signature bridge, come hell or high water, and can he has the wealth to do it—even disregarding safety measures to speed things up. He doesn’t mind killing, as theater director Iris Allen could testify (if he wasn’t already dead), and Blacksad must take out their killer before he can take down Solomon.
Alma, his long-lost love, has reappeared, and that is a dangerous distraction he simply cannot afford.
Will he find out the truth in time?
