What Is What on Earth! Magazine?
What on Earth! delivers bite-sized chunks of reference-book goodness each month. You have all the interest and rigor you’d expect from a leading publisher of reference books with a topical feel and some extra bits of entertainment thrown in. Many children’s magazines are of limited interest, often having plastic tat attached to their front cover, which is usually broken as fast as the magazine’s content is forgotten.
Not so What on Earth! Magazine. It’s perfect for inquisitive children of all ages. Not only does it cover a dazzling array of topics, it also has some great puzzles, jokes, and a child-friendly quiz.

Why Read What on Earth! Magazine — October 2024?
Spooky season is upon us and What on Earth! Magazine is joining in the fun, starting with a focus on spiders. This might put some of us off, but for those who love bugs and creepy crawlies, there’s a rundown of the most dangerous spiders, types of web, and, perhaps most excitingly of all, a diagrammatic cross-section of a spider. This spider smorgasbord is grimly fascinating!
The Halloween shenanigans continue in a Factopia section featuring cats and headless ghosts. You can learn to speak crow, fashion yourself a vampire bookmark, and see a Monster Map that details legends and folktales from around the world.
This month’s Big Read focuses on Mesoamerica and includes a recipe for ancient Olmec chocolate. There’s a fascinating piece on secret facts, which I could tell you more about, but then I’d have to kill you. I found a new section this month that I really liked called “Word Up,” focusing on loanwords—words that are borrowed from one language to be used in another. Rendezvous with page 20 to find out more! If all that wasn’t enough there’s a great infographic about the brain too, as well as all the usual puzzling and jokey favorites.
I’m always impressed by how much fascinating stuff is crammed into each issue of What on Earth! Magazine, and the October issue is no exception.
