Sinister Sons #6 – Peter J. Tomasi, Writer; Vasco Georgiev, Artist; Tamra Bonvillain, Colorist
Ray – 8/10
Ray: Pete Tomasi is one of the writers leaving DC for a new indie initiative after a long time at the company – like decades – and this oddball space adventure is his swan song. After searching across the galaxy, Sinson and Lor-Zod have found their way to New Korugar and have been enlisted by Sinestro in his service rebuilding the planet. But Sinson wants something more – to find out if Sinestro is truly his father. Being a hotheaded kid, though, his method of doing that is shooting Sinestro with darts to get blood for testing, provoking a big fight that Sinestro inevitably wins. Sinestro’s characterization is solid here – Tomasi has written him extensively in the past – and he honestly seems bored more than anything by the idea. Sinson could be useful to him, son or not, but he’s been there, done the dad thing, and really isn’t interested in a happy family reunion.

Lor-Zod was always the more hot-headed of the two, so it’s no surprise that he jumps into the fray and picks a fight with one of the deadliest villains in the DCU. This is the final issue, so the whole plot feels a little rushed – I did say at the end of last issue that it felt like there was way too much story to be told. And there is – but Tomasi might not be telling it. Sinestro here manipulated things in an interesting way that gives him two new weapons in his arsenal, and it seems like these two are going to be heading to the main Green Lantern title to play a role in the power struggle for control of space. This series had some fun moments, but overall didn’t seem to quite live up to its potential – Lor-Zod never really got any development like his counterpart did, and I have to say I’m disappointed that things never got back to Earth so these two could meet and scrap with the Super-Sons!
