Catwoman #67 – Tini Howard, Writer; Carmine Di Giandomenico, Artist; Veronica Gandini, Colorist
Ray – 8/10
Ray: It’s the final act of Tini Howard’s Catwoman run, Selina’s lives have run out, and Veronica Viceroy is descending on Gotham with her army. All that is the recipe for the most action-packed issue of the series yet, as Selina unites all her frenemies for a last stand. I’ve been particularly enjoying the return of Eiko Hasigawa, Selina’s ex-lover and partner in crime. But there’s another complication to this issue – the source of Selina’s sort-of-immortality has been revealed, and now it’s turning against her – slowly killing her. As Selina’s condition starts to degrade, she meets up with several allies before turning to an unexpected enemy for help – one who has hurt her in a deeply personal way before. This is an extremely fast-paced issue, but also somehow feels like just the calm before the storm as all the enemies Selina has made come back to haunt her in one final showdown.

John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America #7 – Simon Spurrier, Writer; Aaron Campbell, Artist; Jordie Bellaire, Colorist
Ray – 9/10
Ray: John Constantine has spent this series in search of Dream’s missing sand, but he wound up on an adventure with some people close to him in the process. But they’re gone now, and Constantine is alone, beginning this story in a massive house inspired by the Winchester Mystery House and in the companionship of an eccentric ghost named Dr. Diablo. This man has been in contact with the sand too, and his story will take Constantine into some of the darkest chapters of American history and its most bizarre secrets. In many ways, this issue brings us full circle, with Constantine finding his journey’s end – and beginning a new one, one that will take him out of this world and into the next, and in the company of one of his most unique frenemies. Special congratulations to Aaron Campbell, whose surreal visions this issue really drive home just how disturbing Constantine’s world can be.
