Ray: This Cartoon Network DC series is far and away the best Superman media content we’ve gotten in the last few decades, so the announcement of a comic spin-off—by the lead writer of the series, no less!—was very welcome news. Midquels are always a dicey prospect, because you know nothing game-changing is going to happen, but this series set between the two series nicely sidesteps that in the first issue by giving us a more human-scale story. Christmas is approaching, and Superman is stuck in Metropolis because of the damage to the Kent farm (about which he pours his heart out to the three least sympathetic reporters at the Planet). Meanwhile, Lois and Jimmy are going overboard to come up with a plan to give Clark an amazing Metropolis holiday season, as Lois grapples with guilt over her father’s actions. But Metropolis itself may have other plans…

Beyond Metropolis. Via DC Comics.

Chaos ensues when the city itself seems to start collapsing, and Superman springs into action to take on a mysterious being that seems to look a lot like Parasite and Ivo. But this one seems to be acting erratically, almost in a panic, and trying to communicate. Superman is about to work with it… when the government shows up, led by a new agency named Checkmate that seems to be at odds with Waller and Slade’s agency. The lead agent is a familiar face as well to anyone who knows the Suicide Squad, and Superman may wind up having to save the very same figure he was trying to fight. This series, unsurprisingly, has the same charm as the cartoon with Superman being far more relatable and human than he usually is. We don’t see too much of Lois and Jimmy here, but they do feel very much like themselves. The new season is the main course for me, but this is looking like a fantastic appetizer.
