Anansi Boys #1, Writers: Neil Gaiman, Marc Bernardin; Artist: Shawn Martinbrough; Colorist: Chris Sotomayor; Letterer: Jim Campbell; Cover Artist: David Mack
Anansi Boys #1 is the first issue adapting one of my favorite of Neil Gaiman’s novels.
With Good Omens taking most of his time, some things getting adapted in their entirety and others kind of in a misty middle ground (like American Gods, and perhaps Anansi Boys) we are in for a treat, as this is one of the happiest, most distinct novels Gaiman has written, an ode to Black culture, music, and the power of storytelling.
Here we will see a famous character from American Gods, the spider and trickster of African lore, the one and only Anansi, and his offspring.
Fat Charlie lives now in London, is engaged to a beautiful lady, and is embarrassed by his father. The tall tales that precede him are inconceivable, they seem fun and light and, yet, he only remembers them under a big cloud of embarrassment.
When his fiancée asks for him to be present at the wedding, Fat Charlie reluctantly calls home, only to learn that his father is dead and that he must immediately drop everything and go to Florida, where he should attend a funeral and give him a proper send-off.
However, nothing has ever come out right for Fat Charlie in his life, and this is just the beginning of the misfortunes he is about to encounter from the moment he puts his father into the ground.
Anansi Boys #1 is on sale since June 26, 2024.
