Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #6 – Brian Buccellato, Writer; Christian Duce, Tom Derenick, Artists; Luis Guerrero, Colorist
Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: This crossover with Legendary’s Monsterverse turned out to be out of continuity, which raised the stakes significantly—so far, we’ve seen the death of Atom Smasher and Guy Gardner, as well as apparently Superman—but it’s no surprise that that one doesn’t stick as this final issue opens. An ancient, all-powerful Titan has risen from the depths, and Lex Luthor is piloting Mechagodzilla, so the stakes are high—and naturally, it’s the two kaiju of the title to the rescue. Kong getting a Green Lantern ring is exactly the kind of ridiculousness I was hoping for from this title, and Godzilla maintains his characterization as a drunk guy at the bar who will fight everyone, but will team up with people who aren’t afraid of him. The villains seem to be little more than plot devices, unfortunately, but this final issue delivers the kind of over-the-top monster action I was hoping for from this series.
Catwoman #65 – Tini Howard, Writer; Ivan Shavrin, Artist
Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: Selina seemed to reach the end of her road floating in deep space at the end of last issue, but the Gods have other plans—or at least, one God, an ancient cat God, who parlays with her and sends her back for one last go. Out of lives, Selina’s back is against the wall as she wakes up in the lair of her enemies. This gives the issue a sense of urgency that really worked, and the art by Ivan Shavrin (new to the title) works really well in the fantasy segments but a little less so in the espionage scenes. It’s very stylized and a bit cartoony. The back half of this issue was losing me a bit, until Selina seeks out her old frenemy Scandal Savage, giving us a quick look at Scandal’s life and revealing that the happily ever after she got at the end of Secret Six is still going strong. The reunited partnership between these two master criminals means the next arc will likely keep building on this one’s strengths now that the nine lives gimmick is over.
