It’s always fun to go do a little reading at Wikipedia and other resources to learn just how relative the facts of history are. For example, the 4th was probably only the day that the final wording of the Declaration of Independence was approved. It was formally signed nearly a month later. And even that date may not be perfect. As John Adams wrote to his wife:
“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival… It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”
“But,” in the immortal words of Dr. Rumrack, “that’s not important right now.”
What is important is the celebration of the start of a place many of us consider home, and which celebration is a great excuse for a little family geekery.
