Sci-fi is at its best when it’s weird and unyielding. Luc Besson understands this. Just look at The Fifth Element and even Lucy, a movie I can’t turn off anytime I see it’s on HBO. There’s an element at play in Besson’s best films that transports and transfixes. The same goes for any hardcore space epic done right. The first trailer for Besson’s newest film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, promises to hit both of those marks.

Valerian is based on Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières’ 1967 French comic series; Valérian and Laureline. This looks like a movie of grand scale, rich with world-building and the visually gorgeous action that’s become Besson’s trademark. The use of The Beatles’ song “Because” in the trailer works really well, but certainly reads as a push to hook Guardians of the Galaxy fans out there with the familiar space-epic/classic rock combo. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets hits theaters in July of 2017.
