Here at The Great Big Beautiful Podcast, we like to keep you guessing. During any given week, our guest might be an artist, an author, an actor, a director, or a living legend. (We don’t like to brag, though.) In other words, we like to keep the show fresh.

That’s why, this week, we’re beyond thrilled to bring you Commander Chris Hadfield: retired NASA astronaut, the first Canadian to walk in space, a phenomenally engaging speaker, and YouTube sensation. Seriously, if you’re one of the five people on the planet who hasn’t seen his cover of Bowie’s Space Oddity – FROM SPACE – you need to go watch it right now.

We were incredibly privileged to get some time with Chris and chat about the importance of grit and determination (in the face of seemingly impossible odds), the overview effect, how the Journey to Mars can be the next generation’s moon landing, becoming a pop culture celebrity while in space, and his upcoming video series for kids (It’s Not Rocket Science).

But nothing I can write about Chris matches up to his own description of himself:

A moustache can tell you a lot about a man. When properly administered, it can say, “this man has commanded spacecraft,” “this man escorted Soviet bombers out of Canadian airspace,” or “this man lived in a research vessel at the bottom of the ocean.” These can be tall orders to live up to – having a moustache is a big responsibility. . . . Chris has worked hard to earn the right to wear his moustache.
