Among the avalanche of news coming out of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was the trailer for the upcoming Marvel/Netflix series, Iron Fist. Iron Fist, for the uninitiated, is part of The Defenders, a group of Marvel Heroes consisting of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. Yes, that is right, all the other members of the Marvel Netflix Universe. The group is set to come together in 2017; Iron Fist will be the last of the Defenders to have a show before they team up.
Finn Jones, who plays Lorus Tyrell on Game of Thrones, is playing the lead Danny Rand/Iron Fist, and the show is being headed up by producer/show runner Scott Buck. Buck said of the character, “Danny Rand is a very complicated character. He’s a billionaire New York Buddhist monk martial arts superhero who’s still trying to figure out what exactly that all means.” Buck went on to say about Finn Jones: “Finn is able to play all these levels in such an honest, relevant way that as soon as I saw him I knew he was our Danny.” Jones would be further praised by Marvel’s head of television Jeph Loeb: “Finn wonderfully blends confidence with vulnerability, making him the perfect choice as he struggles to find his place in the world.”
Here is the official synopsis of the show:
Danny Rand returns to New York City after being missing for years, trying to reconnect with his past and his family legacy. He fights against the criminal element corrupting his world around him with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.
Also in the cast is Game of Thrones alum Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing, a character out of the comics who will be an owner of a martial arts dojo and confidant to Rand/Iron Fist. Carrie-Anne Moss will reprise her role as Jeri Hogarth from Jessica Jones. Moss’ character will assist Rand with the business world of New York.
I look forward to the rest of Marvel’s Defenders series and especially to the magical martial arts to be expected with Iron Fist.
