Disneyland’s Refreshed ‘Soarin’ Ride Flies to New Heights

Soarin' Around the World

This weekend, Disney’s California Adventure theme park saw one of its most popular and original rides, Soarin’ Over California, updated to the more global Soarin’ Around the World. And while we geeks often feel that change is bad, this update shows yet again why the folks at Disneyland are masters of crafting engaging experiences.

The short and sweet description is that nothing but the actual film inside the ride has changed. That includes all the interior dressing, with the classic history of aviation and aviators displayed down the halls, to (most importantly for many riders) the continued inclusion of the original pre-flight video staring Patrick Warburton. Apparently even Warburton didn’t know his role was being retained, when he published this tweet that sent many fans into fits:

Apparently a number of early riders reported back to him over the weekend, and everyone’s worries were put to rest.

Besides that non-controversy, the updated ride itself is a wonderful update. Instead of the original California-focused experience, riders are now taken on a flying journey all over the world. From Greenland to the Serengeti, Monument Valley to the Taj Mahal, the footage is spectacular, merged together seamlessly and, when combined with the gentle motions of the ride and even the new scents projected in the air, make for an even more amazing experience. This is definitely a worthy Soarin’ 2.0.
