Several years ago, I attended a conference sponsored by Ford Motor Company in which one workshop focused on the dangers of learning everything via online. I’m not an alarmist by any means but one issue that struck me during this talk was the discussion over a seemingly lost ability to take proper notes. Meaning, the screen has created an inability to synthesize large swaths of information into the bits that are important.
There’s been some research that one of the keys to taking proper notes and remembering the important elements is writing by hand. This resonated with me. My first published novel was written by hand, via notebooks I took with me to my kid’s swimming lessons. Whenever I’m jammed creatively, I take out my pen and journals and it frees my mind.
All that means I’m particular about my pens. I prefer inkjets, the smoother the better, and ones with some weight. My dream is to have a fountain pen exclusively dedicated for the rough drafts of my novels and non-fiction articles.
Cross has taken geeking out about handwriting one step further this year: they’ve added Star Wars to their Click line-up.
With their Star Wars Click Collection, black gel ink pens are combined with Darth Vader, C-3P0 or a stormtrooper to produce special edition ink gel pens. They retail for $45, priced low-enough to make my budget happy, while supplying a quality pen with heft that feels perfect when I write. There are also matching journals that include a pen holder, embossed design and a leatherette cover. That gift set is $75.
The only thing I covet more? This Star Wars-themed Townsend fountain pen. I’ll treat myself to it if I ever hit the bestseller list.
