Caverns of the Snow Witch is another gamebook from Tin Man Games and the seventh in their Fighting Fantasy series. This story was penned by Ian Livingstone and is, indeed, based on the original story, written in 1984. The gamebook is rich in nostalgia, with artwork from the original book and the ability to turn off design from the app to make it seem more like yellowed pages from 1984.

Readers can choose a difficulty from one of three levels ranging from impossible to a free read mode where all choices are available and you can skip combat altogether. (But where’s the fun in that?!?) Combat is like other gamebooks from the company. Roll the dice and compare to the NPC’s rolls. You can tap the tablet to force the dice to reroll again, but beware — a second roll can always be worse.

Caverns of the Snow Witch is no easy book to make it through, but that’s OK, an easy adventure wouldn’t be worth the money or your time. If you recall the Fighting Fantasy series from the old days, the book is a fun trip down memory lane. But if you’ve never read a Fighting Fantasy book or played a Tin Man Games’ gamebook, Caverns of the Snow Witch is a great example of both and an enjoyable time spent on a tablet.
