Toothless and Dragon Trap

Spin Master’s How to Train Your Dragon 2 Toys

What my kids really been having fun with are the little tiny dragon figurines, like this miniature Hookfang. These tiny ones are five or six bucks each in a little plastic pouch, but it looks like there’s a big set of 12 dragons available, too. They’re perfect for running around and playing dragons, though there aren’t any human figures to go along with them.

There are also several “battle packs,” each with one mini figurine and one dragon trap, like this Gronckle with Gronckle Cannon. The dragon figurines in these sets are pretty much the same as the other little figurines, but each is paired with a matching dragon trap. Toothless comes with a domed trap that actually has a reverse spring-open trigger so you can simulate him breaking out of the trap.

Bewilderbeast toy

And then, of course, there’s the enormous Bewilderbeast. Even though the toy comes with another mini Toothless figurine, I feel like the scale doesn’t quite match what you see in the movie. It’s hard to say. At any rate, the Bewilderbeast roars and raises its head and arms when you push the lever on its back, and also fires an ice blast projectile (accompanied by a sound effect) when you push the trigger on its neck.

The wings, tusks, and the tip of the tail are rubbery, and the rest is hard plastic. The back spine is actually shaped like a handle so little hands can carry it around and trigger the roar with their thumbs. It’s not especially poseable—the hind legs don’t move—and the head and arms tilt back and raise together, but you can raise the arms out to the sides if you like.

Spin Master also sent me a special treat: the Comic-Con Exclusive Final Battle Toothless figurine!

There are a number of these chibi-looking dragon figurines available, from (the non-exclusive) Toothless to the Bewilderbeast to Stoick’s Skull Crusher. They’re pretty adorable, and look like the sort of thing that would be great for decorating your cubicle (or, if you can part with them, let your kids play with).

This one, however, is going to stay on my shelf for a while—it’s been a few years since I’ve gotten to go to Comic-Con, so I’m pretty excited about this one.
