The Doubleclicks closed out their set by joining with Marian Call to sing the PDXYAR theme song:
So PDXYAR apparently started off as a group of folks who liked playing the WizKids Pirates game … and I guess they just really got into it. They learned more about pirates, started putting together costumes, and are now the “Swashbucklers of Stumptown,” providing a piratical atmosphere wherever you may need it. They even successfully raised funds last year on Kickstarter to build a ship.
After the introduction by The Doubleclicks, PDXYAR led the audience in a rousing round of sea shanties, including “Roll the Woodpile Down”:
I didn’t get videos of the rest of them (“Drunken Sailor,” “Blow the Man Down,” and “Nelson’s Blood”) because I was too busy singing along, but it was a lot of fun.
After the show, we chatted a little bit with a couple of the pirates. My wife especially wanted to know the story about Arlene, the lady pirate who was on the end, so we asked her how long she’d been a pirate. She responded that she’d been unofficially officially a pirate for about a week, and officially officially a pirate for, oh, about four or five hours. Domingo “Dingo” Sanchez Villeréal (Quartermaster) explained that they’d done another event at the Eagles Lodge and Arlene was their liason (and bartender) that night. When the PDXYAR crew wanted to find out if they could join the Eagles Lodge, Arlene sponsored them. But then she wanted to know if she could become a pirate — and so this evening she came in her full pirate costume (fishnet stockings and rhinestone garters and all) and joined the crew for their shanties.
Apparently the nicknames have to be approved by committee, but Dingo suggested “Arrrlene” and I think that would be a fine pirate name for the newest member of PDXYAR.
Oh, and I just remembered the pirate jokes they told while getting ready:
Pirate: What’s a pirate’s favorite letter?
Audience: Rrrrrr!
Pirate: What’s a pirate’s favorite type of socks?
Audience: Arrrrgyle!
Pirate: What’s a pirate’s favorite element?
Audience: Arrrrrgon!
Pirate: Nay, it be GOLD!
