What Price for Getting PS Vita First?

Electronics

It took me a little while to realize that the First Edition Bundle of the PS Vita was available a week sooner (15th Feb) than the general PS Vita release (22nd Feb). I know, the clue’s in the name, I must just be a little slow. However, now I’ve caught up with everyone else pre-ordering a PS Vita I thought it might be interesting to see what you get exactly for your $50.

Here’s the First Edition Bundle ($349.99 Amazon) lineup as far as I can tell from the PlayStation blog:

  • PS Vita 3G/WiFi System ($299.99)
  • 4GB memory card ($19.99)
  • Limited edition PS Vita case ($19.99)
  • Little Deviants PS Vita game ($39.99)

This comes to a total of $379.96, which initially seems like pretty good value seeing as you are paying $349.99 — especially considering the early access to the system. However, the more I talked this over with my wife the less sure I was about jumping in early.

Her biggest question was whether I would actually buy a case for the PS Vita if I bought it separately and whether Little Deviants would be my launch game of choice. I actually think that Little Deviants will be a game I buy at launch, alongside Uncharted, but she had a good point about the case — I plan to play my PS Vita at home mainly so probably wouldn’t get a huge amount of value from a plush carrying case.

The biggest issue though, again highlighted by my other half, was whether I wanted to commit to the 3G version of the system. Again, because I’m planning to mainly play it at home — taking advantage of the great family features of the PS Vita — having an out and about data plan doesn’t add a lot of value to me.

Although I dearly wanted to convince myself that this bundle was good value, I had to admit it was just an excuse to get the PS Vita early. I’ve ended up going for the following:

  • PS Vita Wifi System ($249.99)
  • 4GB memory card ($19.99)
  • Uncharted Golden Abyss PS Vita game ($49.99)
  • Little Deviants PS Vita game ($39.99)

This comes in at a cool $359.96 (so there goes my Birthday and Christmas presents this year) and I won’t be getting it until the 22nd, but I’m happy that this is a better match for how I’ll use the system — as is my wife. What does your PS Vita pre-order look like?
