A Modern Art Tribute to Stan Lee

Geek Culture

Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight in Los Angeles is presenting a modern art tribute to the works of Stan Lee (and others). Seriously, if more galleries showed things like this, I wouldn’t have minded all those field trips to museums when I was in grade school. These images are just insanely cool.

Disclaimer: lots of Marvel aficionados argue and debate about Lee’s “creator” status of the various famous Marvel properties. I don’t want to fully open that can of worms here. However, it would be criminal of me to fail to mention the creativity and hard work of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko and all that they did to (co-)create these icons. Certainly, in an exhibition that draws largely from the visual aspects of these properties, credit needs to be given to Ditko and Kirby (as well as Buscema, Colan, Romita Sr., Steranko, and countless others).

Now let’s geek-out over some samples…

This is a funny one of Morbius. The humor doesn’t quite come across until you think of him lamenting all the Hell that he can’t unleash with the CCA blocking him.

Here it looks like Sue Richards and Gwen Stacy have been merged into one being. We’ll have to call B’Elanna Torres for her notes on how she fixed Tuvix.

“The Machine is Keeping Me Alive”… Astounding.

I’m just waiting to hear how you can hack this into one of the Guitar Hero games. Ken?

Paging Jim Steranko… Paging Jim Steranko… Your style has been totally copped…
