Magic: The Gathering World Championships

Geek Culture

Check ’em out this Thursday through Sunday at New York City’s Javits Center in conjunction with the New York Anime Festival. Created in 1993, Magic is played around the world by some eight million fans, and remains the most popular of the various collectable card games.

The championships will feature around a quarter million dollars in prizes including a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, iPhones, MP3 players and many others. Of course, the big-gun tournaments are all invitational only (featuring gamers from eighty nations!) However, there are many opportunities for average joes, with most events in the $10 to $25 range.

If you hope to attend, open registration is from 5-7pm tomorrow. See the Wizards of the Coast web site for more information.
