Ray: This issue does a very clever thing as it takes us deeper into this twisted world of zombies – it completely flips the perspective. Our first look into this unique post-apocalypse showed us how the zombies live – a society of flesh-hungry but still somewhat intelligent dead people, who name each other by their grotesque malformations and form hunting packs for the few remaining humans. But this issue takes us into the story of the woman who encountered our main character last issue – who was carrying a young girl with her. Everyone in this horror story has their own story, and hers involves giving birth in an abandoned car with zombies circling, trying not to scream and alert them. It involves her husband luring the zombies away from them, dying in the process, and leaving her the only person her daughter has in the world, as she battles, injured, to stay one step ahead of the hordes.

When they encounter each other, she reacts with violence – of course she does. She has a daughter to protect and every zombie she’s ever met wants to eat her. Our main character with the beating heart actually appears in very little of this issue, and he’s passive for what he’s in. Where this issue excels is in showing us the minutiae of trying to survive an apocalypse, with the compromises a mother is forced to make and the pain she’s forced to endure. There are several scenes in this issue where she appears strong but subtly gives away the intense pain she’s feeling, both physically and mentally. And our little girl, Rabbit, who is still more naive about the brutality of this world thanks to her mother’s efforts, is the one who might be able to see through the facade. The story only advances a few hours over the course of this issue, but it creates a world of difference.
