Ray: Kara’s Kandor adventures reach their crescendo this issue, as the final battle against Black Flame begins. This has been a brutal arc for Supergirl, as she’s been separated from her
Earth friends, betrayed by her close ally Lesla-Lar, and terribly injured, leading to her being transformed into a cyborg. But now, with her enemies fast on her heels, Kara has once again reunited with Lesla – and Lena, who traveled into Kandor to find her. They not only want to help her get home, but they’ve found a way to super-charge her healing and restore her – potentially with some new powers along the way. This was originally teased by a not-so-accurate cover as the return of Matrix, the 90s Supergirl, and while the character doesn’t appear here, there are enough crumbs for fans to get excited. And just as the battle hits home, Kara finds herself restored, and with a shiny new costume to boot.

I do have to say, even with it being obvious from the start that Kara was going to be healed eventually (because serialized comics) Campbell did an amazing job covering Kara’s short-term disability arc, her adjustment, and her figuring out how to fight on in only a few issues. That’s what’s made this arc excel. Even among the crazy sci-fi action, there’s some real genuine human elements worked in. This issue has an amazing segment between Lesla and her cousin where it’s made clear just how abusive Black Flame has been for their entire lives, and why that affected Lesla’s decision to initially side with her. The final battle for Kandor is almost here, and it seems like it’s going to reset a lot of elements in this series going forward. This issue gives almost everyone their moment to shine (besides poor Conner, who assumes potato-sack form for the entire issue) and sets up some great new developments going forward.
